These statistics from the Pew Research Center’s Forum on Religion & Public Life demonstrate the importance of listening without making assumptions or labeling.
Never accept a label in place of hearing a story. It doesn’t matter if the person we’re listening to calls herself a “practicing Catholic” or an “atheist” or “agnostic” or whatever. We can’t assume we know what she means by using this particular label. We have a responsibility to ask each person has what the labels they use mean to them and what their living experience of God has been like.
