Why So Many Catholics Think They Don't Have a Story

Why So Many Catholics Think They Don't Have a Story

Hello

I can't count the number of times I've asked someone where they've seen Jesus at work in their life, only to watch them apologize.

"I don't really have a story," they say.

Then five minutes later they're describing a marriage that slowly healed. An unexpected peace after grief. A habit they couldn't break until one day it just didn't own them anymore.

They just never thought those moments counted.

Old photographs spilling out of a weathered box on a wooden table, next to a coffee mug and Bible. Text overlay reads: "What if you already have a story? You just haven't recognized it yet."

We assume testimony belongs to people with dramatic conversions — the addiction, the diagnosis, the mountaintop retreat.

So when our own lives don't hand us one of those, we conclude we have nothing to say.

I wrote a reflection about why so many faithful Catholics struggle to recognize what Jesus has already done in their lives, and why that recognition, not a better testimony, is where the story actually begins.

Sometimes the experiences that make up our story also reveal something deeper: the particular ways the Holy Spirit consistently works through us.

If you're beginning to recognize those patterns, our Charism Discernment Coaching can help you identify your spiritual gifts and the fruit they've already produced in your life.
