Green Bay Discipleship Seminar I: Discover Jesus

Diocese of Green Bay Discipleship Seminars

Burning Hearts Disciples is assisting the Diocese of Green Bay in continuing to deepening our friendship with Jesus Christ through Regional Discipleship Formation Seminars. These one-day seminars are designed to help key parish volunteer leaders and parish staff understand the challenges in forming disciples of Jesus Christ and the connection between evangelization, catechesis, parish life, and mission within the discipleship process.

No Discover Jesus Seminars are currently scheduled.

If you would like to schedule a Discover Jesus Seminar for your parish, vicariate, or parish cluster, contact us today!

In 2014, the Diocese of Green Bay launched a process into the new evangelization called “Disciples on the Way”. The goal of “Disciples on the Way” is the renewal of each person and in turn, our parishes through discovering Jesus, following Jesus, worshipping Jesus and sharing Jesus.

Discover Jesus invites all to encounter Jesus Christ and the abundant mercy, hope and love he has for each one of us. Jesus invites us, just as he invites all people to “come and see” (Jn. 1:39) Him and His Body, the Catholic Church. We are focused on awakening hearts and developing an intimate relationship with Jesus Christ through a renewed encounter with the Gospel, by sharing our stories of faith and growing in prayer.

Many parish leaders find that attending a single seminar or retreat day is only able to provide a brief overview of some of the key elements to discipleship and evangelization. Spending time reflecting, praying, and learning both individually and as a group will help ensure you take the concepts from theories and apply them in practice in your own life and in your parish.

Here you can find the handouts and resources used during the seminars as well as a list of resources we recommend for both individuals and groups to help you on your path toward missionary discipleship.

evangelization methodology GB

The Encounter, Accompaniment, Community, Mission methodology is outlined in the USCCB document Living as Missionary Disciples: A Resource for Evangelization. The appendix includes reflection questions for each of the four methodology areas.  Additional resources can also be found in the New Evangelization Library on the website for the Diocese of Green Bay.

If you missed the Regional Seminars or are looking to continue the growth as a disciples you experienced during that day, we would be happy to come put on a seminar or follow up retreat for your parish leadership.

ALPHA FOR CATHOLICS

alpha logo

Alpha is a series of sessions exploring the Christian faith; typically run over eleven weeks. Each talk looks at a different question about faith and is designed to create conversation. Alpha in a Catholic context is a version adapted for Catholics with a few modifications to the content, especially with session eleven focused on the Church. With this, Alpha is designed to be an easy onramp for people to encounter Jesus Christ and develop relationships within the parish community.

A parish roll out of Alpha for Catholics will begin in Fall 2017 and continue through 2018. In the Diocese of Green Bay, Alpha is intended to build upon the Discipleship Formation Seminar by helping people grow in their own journey as disciples.

GROUP SHARING - KERYGMA EXPERIENCE

BY:  DIOCESE OF GREEN BAY DEPARTMENT OF NEW EVANGELIZATION

Spend some time as a group unpacking The Kerygma Experience presented at the Discipleship Seminar. The Encounter & Conversion Handout, particularly the questions on the final page, can be a great source of discussion for your team.

Consider sharing:

  • Which movement of the kerygma was the hardest for you? Why?
  • Which movement of the kerygma was the easiest for you to relate to? Why?
  • What insight came to you through this experience that was new or different for you?
  • What do you need in order to continue to grow as a disciple?

BOOK STUDY - UNDER THE INFLUENCE: THE TRANSFORMING EXPERIENCE OF ENCOUNTERING CHRIST

BY: JOE PAPROCKI

Many Catholics feel catechized but not “evangelized”, meaning they know about Jesus but do not feel they know him personally. The bridge between where we are and where we want to be in our faith journey can be confusing without the right guidance. In Under the Influence of Jesus, best-selling author Joe Paprocki explains complex spiritual concepts with engaging discussion so that “everyday” Catholics can integrate and articulate their faith and live the Gospel in a way that is simple, compelling, contemporary, liberating, and life-changing.

KERYGMA

RETREAT DAY - KERYGMA: A PROCLAMATION OF THE GOSPEL OF JESUS CHRIST

BY: BARBARA MASON REED

Kerygma is a Catholic Bible-based retreat which gives the participants the opportunity to encounter the Lord Jesus through hearing and responding to His Word and renewing the gifts and graces received in Baptism & Confirmation. Although it uses both Scripture and Church teaching to announce the Good News of Jesus Christ, it is not an academic study of salvation history but rather an opportunity for the many Catholics who do not know the basic Gospel message to experience its life-changing effects.
