When the Need Is Bigger Than You

When the Need Is Bigger Than You

Hello Visitor,

On July 27, an EF3 tornado tore through the Fox Cities – less than 9 miles from where we're based.

My sister, her daughter, and one of my sister's friends felt particularly drawn to go help with the physical cleanup. So I went with them.

Standing in the middle of that kind of destruction makes something painfully obvious:  There is far more need than any one of us can meet.

Storm damage from the July 2026 EF3 tornado in the Fox Cities, including an overturned vehicle amid debris.

That's true after a tornado. It's also true every time we encounter suffering that is bigger than our own capacity to respond.

Christians sometimes get mocked for offering "thoughts and prayers." Sometimes unfairly. Sometimes not.

But the answer isn't to pray less. And it isn't to feel responsible for doing everything.

Prayer brings us to a more particular question:

Lord, what are You asking of me?

I wrote more about that question in our newest reflection:

Our charisms matter here. They're part of how God has already equipped us to participate in His work – and sometimes discernment begins simply by recognizing what He's already placed in our hands.

If that's a question you haven't had much room to sit with lately, charism discernment coaching is one way we can help.
